Description: Nestled on the coast of Campania overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is the quintessential Italian seaside escape. The main square, Piazza Tasso, is bordered by cafes and small souvenir shops, while the old town is a tangle of narrow lanes filled with cobblers and cosy trattorias. Head down to the waterfront and you’ll discover a charming marina with a handful of seafood restaurants, as well as a couple of bathing platforms (sandy beaches are in short supply here, so loungers are laid out neatly on wooden jetties). From Sorrento’s clifftop viewpoints, you can gaze across the water to Mount Vesuvius; day trips to the volcano and the towns it buried (Pompeii and Herculaneum) can be easily done.
